A prehistoric creature awakened by an atomic test emerges from the Arctic and heads south, leaving destruction in its wake.
One of the foundational monster movies of the 1950s, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms was inspired by Ray Bradbury's short story The Fog Horn. Although the film significantly expanded the original premise, Bradbury's tale of a lonely sea creature and a remote lighthouse provided the spark that launched the project.
The film is perhaps best remembered for the groundbreaking stop-motion animation of legendary effects artist Ray Harryhausen, whose work would influence generations of filmmakers and special effects artists. Released months before Godzilla, it helped establish the giant monster genre and became one of the defining science fiction films of the Atomic Age.
