Okay, here it is, straight from the horses's mouth: "_One Timeless Spring_, _Kaleidoscope_, and _Journey to Far Metaphor_ do not exist! I noted this to Morrow, so hopefully they'll drop them. This has gone on for years."--Donn Albright. Donn also says, "you must realize he's been in 800 original anthologies and another 800 1st printing textbook." Now, I assume these mostly refer to collected stories, but with such numbers, it's possible some "anthologized but not collected" appearances are missing from this list! IP: Logged |

Eh bub! Bradbury is coming out with some new ones. And guess what, a book, THE STORIES OF RAY BRADBURY, has been out for a while. It has 100 stories in it. Great book! IP: Logged |

Hmmm, either remove "The Troll" or make that 81 uncollected stories. See the amended list in the most recent batch of titles above. By the way, as Donn Albright has no projected publication date for his bibliography, these online lists are *it* for now! IP: Logged |

Don't forget about Ray's short story, The Drummer Boy of Shiloh. It was included in an 8th grade English text book. I was fortunate enough to cover that material with the students and was able to record an interview I conducted with Ray on my speaker phone. The students seemed to enjoy the little extra to make the lesson interesting. Basically I asked Ray what was the idea behind thestory and he related it. IP: Logged |

I haven't forgotten "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh." In fact, one of these days I plan to find the letters published right after its appearance in "The Saturday Evening Post," really cute and funny, where everyone who wrote in claimed to have known the actual drummer boy! This, however, is a list of Ray's uncollected stories. "The Drummer Boy of Shiloh" was collected, in "The Machineries of Joy." For a list of his complete stories, see the thread on Story Categories and Classifications. Still under construction, it will list EVERY story and "bridge-passage" of which I am aware. IP: Logged |

Perhaps the best solution would be to bring out a multi-volume set (10-15 volumes!) titled "Complete Stories." They'd have to be labeled by volume number, followed by a title identifying that volume and setting it apart from the rest. Each story should appear just once, all grouped more or less by type, with less-successful stories distributed among more-successful ones of the same type. It would be really interesting to arrange them this way to show how his writing developed and demonstrate what "worked" and what didn't. IP: Logged |

This would be much like the complete works of Poe, Twain, Doyle, etc. That would be monumental and fantastic to behold! The only catch is, when it went to the publisher's where would the 100 or so "new" works he produced in the interum be placed? The next Volume, maybe! How many stories would we be talking about? The story list in the thread titled "Story Classifications" is now complete up until about 1963. After that some are probably missing, but counting what's there so far will give a rough idea. IP: Logged |

On this same subject, do you have any information on these titles that I've also seen: "The Love Affair" and "The Last Good Kiss". I have a theory that they are special one time printings of two short stories. Could they be more than that? IP: Logged |

Yes, everyone pray for good health and prosperity for Donn Albright! If anything happens to him, the rest of us are sunk! I'll pass this on to him. He can correct me if wrong, or I may find the answers myself going through the sheafs of pages of reference material I printed from online, but I believe "The Love Affair" contained only the title story. It was a special printing of a story which later appeared in a collection. "The Last Good Kiss" was also a special printing, of a poem, I think listed for $400.00?! I don't know if it's ever been published elsewhere. IP: Logged |

Hi, guys, I've updated this by: --Removing a retitled story from the originals list. --Removing all stories which appear in "Driving Blind" and "One More for the Road" from the "uncollected" list. --Adding five published, but still uncollected, stories. --Adding copyright years to recent uncollected stories so the list can be put in order. I have acquired "One More for the Road" and a couple of the anthologies, so I will let you know the "new count" of unread stories when I've read all I have. As mentioned several times above, anyone really wishing to find certain "anthologized but not collected" stories can search for them at www.locusmag.com ; new anthologies come out all the time. The "new count" of uncollected stories is now 78--almost as many as before the publication of "One More for the Road"! [This message has been edited by dandelion (edited 01-17-2003).] IP: Logged |

Trade Requests: Besides anthologies, another way rare early stories come available is through vintage issues of pulp magazines, which come up on eBay all the time. With this in mind, I thought maybe someone here might have some of the stories mentioned. I'll list early (pre-1970) stories I don't have in any form, followed by those I do, and perhaps we can arrange to trade photocopies of our copies: Stories of which I have no copies (not even of any kind) *These were in well-known publications and I can easily obtain copies. Stories I have in the form of anthology appearances, original magazine appearances, or magazine reprints. Numbers following are the number of photocopied pages (1 page per copy for magazines, 2 for books) it would take to copy each story.) Dandelion::: Years ago I wrote ...The Saturday Evening Post... asking why they didn't publish any more Ray Bradbury stories. No reply. And that was to Editor SerVaas, a very nice medical doctor lady. Well, sent another letter. No soap. Asked Ray...He said he didn't know why! Hmmm. Literary Politics? Anyway... my idea also was tfor someone to gather all the 'love stories' of Ray's works... Death and the Maiden, April Witch, exerpts from Dandelion Wine...etc etc... to intro him to people who would never have read him otherwise, with the Sci-Fi label. But all this was back in early 1980's. IP: Logged |

Updated again, noting previously uncollected stories slated to appear in the forthcoming volume. When I have a final version actually in hand, I'll remove them. It also considerably changes my possible for trade list. Let's have another look at the totals: Uncollected stories I've read (removing the noted ones): 27 Uncollected stories I haven't read: 42 Total stories still uncollected: 69 Still enough for over four average-sized collections, two above-average-sized collections, or one very large collection! Sorry to resurrect a dormant topic, but I've just been building a database of short stories as collected in Bradbury's books, cross-referencing it with as many external sources as possible (ISFDB has proven useful for this, but also annoyingly incomplete). Jerry Weist's book has also helped identify a couple of precise dates for magazine appearances - but annoyingly doesn't identify which printings were "firsts" and which were reprints. Anyway: dandelion, given your excellent work in this topic, especially with UNCOLLECTED stories, would you mind if I incorporate the above material into the story finder on my web page? Which reminds me of a question I meant to ask months ago: is there an FAQ for this forum? - Phil [This message has been edited by philnic (edited 09-07-2003).] IP: Logged |

You can use this information, which is not really original with me, but compiled from several other sources. For a truly complete list of short stories on this site, see "Story Classifications (Under Construction)" but that gives only titles, original year of publication, and categories, not first appearances. I've tried to put them in the correct order by month and year but haven't listed each actual date. I believe locusmag.com gives a pretty complete rundown of first appearances. I've never looked for an FAQ here because I already know everything! Just kidding, ha-ha. I will say there could be a lot more to this site were it entrusted to the right hands. IP: Logged |

Apologies for further resurrection, but I have found this site very recently. The list of uncollected stories is so impressive and I thought I might be able to contribute just a little bit:
Mummy Dust gDfJournalh May 1939 (as "Cecil Clayborne Cunningham") To Make a Long, Long Story Much, Much Shorter gScripth July 5, 1941 and Skeleton gScripth April 28, 1945 are both anthologized in THE BEST OF ROB WAGNERfS SCRIPT ed. Anthony Snide; Scarecrow Press, 1985 The Bonfire gTorquasian Timesh Winter 1950-1951 is anthologized in GAUNTLET 2 ed. Barry Hoffman; Borderlands Press, 1991 The Hour of Ghosts gSaturday Reviewh October 25, 1969 is anthologized in GHOST TOUR ed. Peter Haining; London: William Kimber [1984] A Summer Day gRedbookh August 1978 Great Day in the Morning gAmerican Wayh May 15, 1992 Appreciate your double-checking of the above. IP: Logged |

The first two, I never heard of, but if they are short prose fiction, definitely by Bradbury, and not already listed under any other title, certainly they should count. Those anthologies, I did not know of, thanks! The only one which should definitely not count here is "A Summer Day." That was the magazine title of "Hopscotch," which is a collected story. I haven't checked new fiction in awhile and don't know when I will, so no doubt the uncollected stories list will grow then as well, making this an ongoing, not resurrected, thread. IP: Logged |

Hello again, dandelion! Thank you for the correction; you are right, "A Summer Day" was retitled and collected in QUICKER THAN THE EYE. By the way, do you know why BRADBURY BITS & PIECES: THE RAY BRADBURY BIBLIOGRAPHY: 1974-88 was never done? I understand the book was supposed to be a definite sequel/supplement to THE RAY BRADBURY COMPANION and planned release around 1992. IP: Logged |

No, but I think it might still be being worked on. Obviously I need to contact Donn with some questions as soon as I get a chance. Of those listed above as "Need, Don't Have," I have acquired "Hollerbochen's Dilemma" and "The Undead Die." I've given up on "Love Contest" and "They Knew What They Wanted" being collected and plan to photocopy the magazine versions next time at the library. As for the others, I am still in the market for all except those which appeared in [This message has been edited by dandelion (edited 03-26-2004).] IP: Logged |

Bits and pieces: gThe Affluence of Despairh is, I think, a non-fiction piece. It was printed first time in Wall Street Journal April 3rd, 1998 (83 lines of text). gThe Beautiful Shaveh is a complete version of gThe Executionh (a story fragment) which appeared in Xenophile #36 [November] 1977. gThe Hour of Ghostsh is an AT&T ad story. Thus it appeared various magazines at almost the same time then e.g. Harperfs Magazine November 1969. gMomento Morih appeared in an anthology gGATHERING THE BONESh August 2003. Likely a first printing. Appreciate your double-checking in due course. IP: Logged |

It seems to me as if "The Beautiful Shave" and "The Execution" were two different stories. IP: Logged |

Thanks, I always appreciate your comments, dandelion. BTW, I have read somewhere Ray once had been planning to write a STORY called "Leviathan 99" (I believe it is relative to "That Ghost-That Bride of Time"). I wonder it's been finished... IP: Logged |

It is possible I may be of some help here. I spent a number of years researching and collecting many of these stories. Of course the Futuria Fantasia, The Damn Thing, Script and other fanzine stories are very difficult to track down (and very expensive when you do manage to find one), however, I have amassed a modest 55/91. I put my collection on hold when my daughter was born, but recently unearthed "Hollerbochen's Dilemma" and now my interest is growing. What do I collect? I collect short stories that never appeared in a RAY BRADBURY book. In other words, "The Ducker" was originally published in Weird Tales (Nov, 1943) but was not included in Dark Carnival or any Bradbury anthology. It was, however, included in a short story collection titled Weird Legacies edited by Mike Ashley in 1977 (Star). I understand my list of these types of stories is out of date (by 5 years now) but I believe the list I have is fairly comprehensive. I would love to compare notes. Also, I have always argued with myself over the ethical nature of trading copies of these stories. I have battled the temptation to run a photocopy of a story and trade with another collector. Why?? Because they are uncommon and finding them is like finding diamonds in the snow... oh, and they are not being reprinted (yet). Thank you for letting me post! IP: Logged |

quite a few actually... of course my list is about 5 years old and some of these stories may have been published (i know a few were in One More For the Road) maybe you can help me figure out what, if any, they are and where these can be found. here is what i have on my list that you did not have listed: The Death of Mr. McCarthy
also, if you want a list of the stories i have copies of, let me know and i will get you what i have and what i am looking for!

The Death of Mr. McCarthy Mummy Dust (as Cecil Clayborne Cunningham) The Offering Where's Lefty? The Silence (Super Science Stories, 1949) Watch this space. Awesome work... I can't wait to check all this!!! My list will surely shrink. I had no idea about the Hannes Bok information... how did you find out about that?? Quicker Than the Eye has a story titled "The Electrocution" - not "The Execution"... Never trust the actual titles in the Contents Menu - always check the publication information... it will tell you if story titles have been previously published and if titles have been re-named. I have The Cat's Pajamas and have already checked... the only previously published story is A Careful Man Dies which, as we all know, was published in A Memory of Murder.
As far as the other stuff, I don't doubt your research, I always like to see it with my own eyes. My list was put together by research and not by trusting other lists so I think it bothers me a bit that I missed all these!!! But I am very thankful for your hard work. Indeed! I will post later today and a new master list should be included here! Maybe in alphabetical order with publishing information. IP: Logged |

I agree with you about the unreliability of lists of stories. My own list is not fault-free, but most of the items have been cross-checked against several sources. I find the publication details on the copyright extension pages of Ray's books is sometimes inaccurate, leading to (apparent or real) contradictions. On the other hand, many of his stories have appeared in so many places, with so many different titles, that it must be difficult for Ray/his editor/his agent to keep track! Cat's PJs: at least two other stories have been previously published - Sixty-Six and A Matter Of Taste (the latter admittedly only a month or so earlier, and probably in a different form - I have seen the version in It Came From Outer Space, but not the version in Cat's PJs). - Phil [This message has been edited by philnic (edited 07-25-2004).] IP: Logged |

ok (whew)... >Remembrance - Unless this is "different material, same title," this is a poem and shouldn't appear on the short story list.< It does appear to be a poem. I don't know why it was included on my list... hmmm... >A Wild Night In Galway - Not Uncollected. Appears as part of "Green Shadows, White Whale."< Can anyone substantiate this? Although 12 previously published stories are credited in the publication data page for Green Shadows White Whale, "A Wild Night In Galway" is not one of them. Google didn't help me either... >From the Dust Returned - Not Uncollected. Appears as part of "From the Dust Returned."< Again, 6 previously published stories are credited on page 205 of the book From the Dust Returned. "From the Dust Returned" (Magazine of F&SF, Sep, 1994) is not listed here. Does someone have a definitive answer for this?? >A Summer Day (1979) - Not uncollected. Expanded as "Hopscotch" in "Quicker than the Eye."< Page 262 of Quicker Than the Eye lists all copyright notices for this book. 12 stories are listed... "A Summer Day"/"Hopscotch" is not one of them. The phrase "All Other Stories Are Original to This Collection, Copyright 1997 by Ray Bradbury" is at the bottom. Unless you have other info, I would suggest that "Hopscotch" is an original story and NOT the 1979 "A Summers Day" >The Execution - Not Uncollected. Printed in "Quicker than the Eye."< Quicker Than the Eye does not include a story titled "The Execution" nor does it include information regarding this story in the Publication Data page. >Return From Death (as Anthony Carvais) This is big news to me! I need to check my resources, but I would love to know who shed light on this! >Referent (as Brett Sterling) - Not Uncollected. Published in "The Day it Rained Forever" (the story collection, not the play.)< YES! I included the non-US publication in my list, so you are correct... all UK only publications (A Small Assassin, The Day it Rained Forever, Long After Midnight) did include stories on my list. This includes the following stories which you commented on: >Asleep In Armageddon (Perchance to Dream) - Not Uncollected. Published in "The Day it Rained Forever" (the story collection, not the play.)< The Day It Rained Forever includes a story titled "Perchance to Dream" - is this the same story that appeared in Planet Stories (Winter, 1948)?? My own list does mention that this was "later retitled 'Perchance to Dream'") >The Sea Shell - Not Uncollected. Published in the "Dark Carnival" reissue.< YES! >These Things Happen - Not Uncollected. Published as "A Story of Love" in "Long After Midnight."< YES! >Tread Lightly to the Music - Not Uncollected. Published as "Getting Through Sunday Somehow" in "Long After Midnight."< YES! Please know that I don't trust my own list and you probably have access to information I don't. After checking your list, these are the questions that popped up. In an effort to get to the bottom of this, I responded. If someone on this list has access to these stories and can double-check, we will have a pretty awesome list of uncollected stories!!! Thanks to you and everyone for all your research! IP: Logged |

djmonolith, "A Wild Night in Galway" is chapter 6 of Green Shadows, but it has been re-written (some of the characters have been changed to fit the continuity of the rest of the novel). I have seen this with my own two eyes, and can therefore substantiate it. This, incidentally, illustrates the unreliability of the copyright pages in some of Ray's books! All I can say about the others items you mention (e.g. Hopscotch) is that the information in my list is the information I have - I don't have many of the original sources to cross-check against. But somebody on this board probably does... - Phil IP: Logged |
